Numerous companies are improving their digital tools such as the cloud. The cloud is very important for a business as it is a safe place to store important information and documents of a company.

When dealing with migrating your company’s assets to the cloud infrastructure, you need to be confident in the process as well as the outcome.

Most of the time, cloud computing initiatives will not deliver the desired results of cloud migration. Usually, this is because applications underperform in the cloud and everything will have to be reverted.

The tangible benefits of moving to a managed data infrastructure —  robust security, cost-effectiveness, improved agility, and better scalability — come with a set of risks too.

There are ways to evaluate cloud migration yourself. Once you understand the evaluation, you have a better idea of the risks of cloud migration. Furthermore, you will have the checklist and tools to measure the success of your cloud migration.

1. Create A Plan For Your Migration

Before you begin any major changes inside your business, you need to have a plan. The repercussions of doing it with improper understanding could overshadow the benefits of the process. The same goes for cloud migrations.

Your plan must look at the bassline situation of your current system. Once you use the existing infrastructure of your company, you will understand the objective that lies ahead of you much more clearly.

It is highly advised you use machine data that gives you an extensive inventory of servers, applications, and dependent supporting technologies.

This machine data will show key metrics, including the connections of applications and microservices that will have custom dashboards, giving you full visibility.

Next, the data analytics will generate meaningful metrics and thresholds to evaluate once the full migration is completed. Not only does it provide you with a full analysis of the migration, but it also helps you confirm if the objects have been met.

2. Monitor The Performance Of Applications

Review the tools that monitor your resources such as your CPU, disk, network and storage that power your applications.

These could be tools on-premises or in the cloud. It will give you a good insight into the health of the system however, it won’t give you an insight into the application, responsiveness as well as if there are any errors.

You can easily identify over or under-provisioning of the new cloud environment by using system-level resource observations and application performances.

Make sure to review the information that is in the existing infrastructure configuration and once the transfer is completed to the cloud, you will then have an in-depth knowledge of the information stored in the cloud.

3. Confirm Cloud Security

Keeping both data and applications safe is a huge responsibility. There are a lot of things that can go wrong during a cloud migration but one of the most vulnerable things is the security of your company.

In a recent study, around 81% of the people who partook in this study found that cloud security is the most difficult to manage when migrating a workload.

Machine data has a vital role to play when securing your information processing environment during the move to the cloud. The analytics of this machine’s data can process huge volumes of log data that can help pick out any vulnerabilities during the migration.

A high-quality analytic report will be able to tell you those risks as well such as phishing, exfiltration and denial of service. It will also identify gaps where you can resolve them in the existing premises.

4. Confirm Compliance

It doesn’t matter the industry your company works in, there is a high chance that if not completed correctly, it can breach several rules and regulations. If you do not manage to keep up with the legal requirements, you could face civil and criminal penalties.

If you set up machine data compliance baselines, both the cloud migration begins, and it can protect your company from any lawsuits. It will be highly beneficial and help prevent the inevitable regulatory audits that are to come after the migration.

Something else you will need to do before you begin your cloud migration is review the cloud vendor itself. Platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services or even a multi-cloud environment will all need to be reviewed.

You must make sure you are clear with the compliance requirements, allowing you to avoid any confusion with the cloud provider during the migration.

5. What Are Your Key Performance Indicators?

You will be surprised by the number of key performance indicators that you will have to establish during the journey of cloud migration.

This could lead to cutting costs and replacing them with smaller and more predictable outcomes. Something else that may be your priority is flexibility with the cloud itself.

No matter what the critical metric is for your company, you must establish these early on before you start a cloud migration. That does not matter whether they are business-orientated or technical KPIs.

To be well prepared and understand the importance of your cloud migration, you need to establish these KPIs before it even begins.

It can be hard to realize whether or not the cloud migration has benefited your company or not. Additionally, you might be the business owner and will therefore need to prove to the people above you that the migration was worth the investment for the business itself.

6. Benchmarking and Optimization

This is often dismissed by “paralysis by analysis”. It is hated by some although others admire benchmarking. There are many pros to benchmarking however, the main reason is accelerating troubleshooting. It acts as a symptom that will help you decide whether the error is an emergency.

To design a benchmark, we add crowdsourced content to errors which have been observed during an incident. It allows you to benchmark a company’s operational and security posture.

Another positive that comes with benchmarking is that it helps you to prioritize and establish anomalies that are detected from an entity’s previous baselines.

7. Systemize The Workflow

Machine data as well as streaming signals that have been generated by your digital assets show important information about the behaviour of customers, users and stakeholders.

Thanks to cloud technology that you use, you are then able to act on the information, helping you to remain competitive within your field. It is very important if you want to stay ahead of your competitors.

You can tie your data together, allowing you to create a dashboard that shows your business process. If you systemise your workflow into files, you can then share it with the members of your team during a cloud migration.

8. Ensure That All Of Your Company’s Data Is Carried Over Correctly

In today’s modern world, billion-pound companies ensure they use multiple clouds to manage their data and keep it safe. A company is reaping the full benefits of a cloud computing model if they manage workloads across many different clouds.

If you are considering a multi-cloud approach for your company, there are a couple of things you need to do correctly. One of those includes capturing the data and transforming it into real-time analytics. There are endless benefits to this and it makes time management a lot easier as you do not have to manually check whether data and information have migrated successfully.

Why Are Companies Migrating To The Cloud?

There are endless benefits to cloud migration. No matter whether your company is small or large. The main reason a company will migrate to the cloud is that it is far more secure than its existing system.

Cloud migration can help a company manage the development of the lifecycle process far more efficiently than the process.

Another reason why a business will consider a cloud migration strategy is for better scalability and availability. It also allows much quicker deployment of software services.

Furthermore, the cost of manually managing an on-premises data centre to store information will cost far too much money compared to cloud storage such as AWS, Google, Microsoft Azure or even a multi-cloud storage.

Once a cloud migration has successfully migrated, the business will reap the benefits of a much more efficient system.

This system will be so efficient that it could also mean they can spend money on their employees elsewhere who manually managed this data and information. Not to mention that it can also reduce the cost of the hardware they used to keep all of this data as well.

One final point to make with cloud migration is to tell your business cyber security team that this is happening. Likely, they will already know about it as they will need to make sure there are no security issues during the migration process.
