The ALPHV ransomware group has claimed the Seiko data breach. This claim comes in the wake of a prior cyber incident that occurred in July 2023. Seiko formally disclosed this event on August 10, 2023, through a formal communication titled “Notice of Data Breach and Response.”
The ALPHV ransomware group reportedly orchestrates the Seiko cyber attack. However, the company has not disclosed the official names of the threat actor who caused the incident in July 2023.
The ALPHV ransomware group, a notorious player in underground hacking forums, has left its mark on Seiko, adding the company to its growing list of victims.
Further, the threat actors displayed the company’s slogan as a featured image, making their message clear: they have successfully accomplished their Seiko data breach heist.
Seiko data breach confirmed, cyber attack in July 2023
The threat actors pointed out the vulnerabilities they exploited on their dark web channel, citing “low security of its networks and products” as the reason behind their attack.
To emphasize their point, the threat actors released a total of 16 attachments, providing insights into the stolen data and its contents.
According to a tweet by security analyst Dominic Alvieri, ALPHV/BlackCat also leaked information about Seiko’s upcoming special edition releases and model revisions for the Transformers series.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, a subsequent post by the threat actors claimed to have gained control of all 13 trusts associated with the company.
These trusts include domains like SEIKOLOCAL, WATCH, SEIKO, AD, SEIKO-WATCH, SEIKO-P, SEIKO-SOL, SEIKO-STS, WAKO, SEIKO-CLOCK, MSICADCAM, SEIKO-RM, IIM01, and SEIKO-G, highlighting the broad scope of the Seiko data breach.
The Seiko data breach comes in the wake of a prior incident where the company had shared information about a cyber attack on August 10, 2023.
According to the official announcement, unauthorized parties gained access to at least one of Seiko’s servers on July 28 of the same year.
This prompted the company to take immediate action by enlisting the services of external cybersecurity experts on August 2 to investigate and assess the situation.
Responding to Seiko data breach
In an effort to address the Seiko data breach and alleviate concerns, Seiko Group Corporation stated, “We are now reasonably certain that there was a breach and that some information stored by our company and/or our Group companies may have been compromised.”
“Currently, we are verifying the exact nature of the information that was stored on the impacted servers. As soon as our ongoing investigation produces more specific results, we will report this immediately.”
The company also reassured its stakeholders, customers, and partners, apologizing for any distress caused and urging vigilance against suspicious communications.
