A charming video of popular Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna smiling in an elevator quickly went viral, captivating fans on social media. But the buzz turned to disbelief when it was revealed that the video was not real — it was a deepfake.

The news that the widely shared video was a digitally altered fake has sparked a wave of concern on social media over the potential misuse of deepfake technology.

So, What Is Rashmika Mandanna Deepfake Video All About?

The viral deepfake video initially surfaced on Instagram, portraying what appeared to be the beloved Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna. However, a closer examination revealed a disturbing truth – this video was a deepfake impersonating Zara Patel, a British-Indian social media influencer.

The viral deepfake video is a striking testament to the sophistication of deepfake technology. It opens with an innocuous scene, but at just one second in, a subtle transition occurs, deftly replacing Zara Patel’s visage with that of Rashmika Mandanna. The result is a disconcertingly convincing illusion.

Reacting to the widespread circulation of the deepfake video, Rashmika Mandanna addressed her fans and the public on Platform X. She voiced her dismay, stating, “I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online. Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me, but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused.”

She continued, “Today, as a woman and as an actor, I am thankful for my family, friends, and well-wishers who are my protection and support system. But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I genuinely can’t imagine how I could ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity theft.”

Reacting to Rashmika Mandanna’s viral deepfake video, the legendary Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan took to social media to demand legal action against the creators of the deepfake video.
By sharing the video and firmly advocating for legal intervention, he unequivocally emphasized the gravity of the situation.

Public Reactions and Concerns Related to Viral Deepfake Video

Common masses also stepped up to express their reaction to this viral deepfake video. Social media platforms have been abuzz with concerns and opinions, shedding light on the potential ramifications of unchecked deepfake technology.

iNK_Daddy, for instance, astutely observed the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence that enable the effortless creation of deepfakes. He tweeted, “Think it’s funny that people are getting scared that AI can do things that people have been doing for the last 5-10 years, but AI can do it effortlessly for anyone who can access it.”

Viral deepfake video

Amitesh Jasrotia portrayed a bleak scenario, highlighting how deepfake technology could manipulate audio. He envisioned a distressing situation where a mother’s voice is impersonated, urgently requesting financial assistance following a family emergency: “Wait for the moment when someone’s mother desperately calls her son to transfer money to her new number since dad just had a cardiac arrest (audio deepfake).”

Viral deepfake video

Ganesh Maurya, echoing the sentiments of many, expressed profound concern regarding the violation of privacy and consent inherent in deepfake technology. He passionately called for legal action against the creators and distributors of such content, underscoring the importance of holding these individuals accountable under the law:

“The use of deepfake technology to create inappropriate videos is deeply concerning and is a violation of privacy and consent. Legal action should definitely be taken in such cases. The individuals responsible for creating and distributing these videos should be held accountable under the law. Cyber laws often cover such acts of digital impersonation and misuse of images, and engaging with legal authorities is a necessary step to ensure that the rights of the affected individuals are protected, and justice is served.

The Imperative for Legal and Regulatory Frameworks

Rashmika Mandanna’s deepfake video serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for a legal and regulatory framework in India to combat the misuse of this technology.

To protect individual rights and ensure justice is served, it is crucial to enforce existing cyber laws covering digital impersonation and image misuse.

Jatinder Singh Randhawa, Director at the Government of India (GOI), has underlined the urgency of addressing deepfake technology’s misuse. He emphasized, “I firmly believe that addressing this issue and advocating for legal action is paramount to safeguard individuals’ rights.”

He further added, “Legal authorities play a pivotal role in ensuring justice is served. Investigation and prosecution of those involved in the creation and distribution of inappropriate deepfake content are not only a matter of personal vindication for the victim but also serve as a deterrent to potential wrongdoers.”

Major Vineet Kumar, Founder of the CyberPeace Foundation, urged for legal recognition of deepfakes within the Indian legal system. He stressed the need for criminalizing policies and reporting advisories to address this new form of digital crime, highlighting the violation of privacy in the Rashmika Mandanna and Zara Patel deepfake case.

“This instance clearly shows a violation of the Right to privacy of both Rashmika Mandanna and Zara Patel, and this cannot be taken lightly as this is the new age form of crimes against women in the digital space,” he opined.

Challenges and Solutions in the Era of Deepfake Videos

Beyond the concerns raised by Rashmika Mandanna and the public, the challenges associated with deepfake videos are multifaceted, demanding a comprehensive approach.

Binod Singh, CEO and Chairman of Cross Identity, shed light on the potential risks arising from the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in businesses. He emphasized the expansion of the attack surface due to these technologies, introducing new vulnerabilities within organizations.

Singh continued, “Threat actors are quick to exploit these vulnerabilities, posing significant risks to data integrity, privacy, and overall security. Additionally, the use of biometric data in VR systems raises concerns about data protection and privacy.”

To address these challenges, Singh advocated for a proactive approach centered around Identity-First security and the application of the Zero Trust Principle. Education and awareness also play a vital role in mitigating these complex issues.

In the face of evolving technology, these insights highlight the importance of addressing not only the consequences of deepfake videos but also the broader cybersecurity challenges they present, for individuals and organizations alike.

The Rashmika Mandanna incident underscores the critical need to establish a robust legal and regulatory framework in India to address these issues. It is imperative that action is taken to safeguard individuals from the harmful consequences of deepfake technology and to hold accountable those who exploit it for malicious purposes. The time to act is now, before the line between reality and deception becomes irreparably blurred.
