Curious to know if your WhatsApp is hacked? It turns out that there is more than one way to hack a WhatsApp account. From Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to anti-establishment journalists in South Asia, victims of WhatsApp hacking can be found across the world.

In 2022, Instant messaging app Telegram’s founder Pavel Durov was all over cybersecurity news for days when he alleged last month that WhatsApp had been a surveillance tool for 13 years and that people should stay away from the messaging app.

His allegation came days after WhatsApp disclosed a security issue on the platform. According to him, all it takes is sending a malicious code-laden video or starting a video call for a hacker to get access to all the data on a smartphone.

Here is how to check if your WhatsApp has been hacked and what we can do to counter the threat.

WhatsApp is Hacked: Indicators

  • Your friends alert you about spam or phishing links coming from your WhatsApp account.
Hackers who get access to other people’s WhatsApp accounts frequently bombard those users’ contact lists with spam. Tip: Check the chat for any unknown messages sent or received.
  • Strangers suddenly pop up in your phone contact list.
If you receive any messages from an unfamiliar contact, someone else may be accessing your WhatsApp account. Hackers will occasionally add new contacts using your WhatsApp account.
Tip: Check your contact list for strangers.
  • Changes to your contact information.
You discover that your account information has changed when reviewing your profile. For instance, the hacker could alter your display picture, name, or status.
Tip: Go to Settings, select your Profile at the top of the menu, and review the information and verify that it is accurate and up-to-date.

How to Check If Your WhatsApp Has been Hacked: Counter Measures

Having used these steps, you have now checked your WhatsApp account. Your investigation would result in only two options. The first is that your WhatsApp account has been hacked, in which case you should try to reset your password as soon as you learn about it. The second scenario, though, is that no one will be able to access your account.

Either way, you may add further protection to your WhatsApp account by turning on Two-Factor Authentication to keep others from accessing it. The methods to enable this extra security are listed below.

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
  2. Select Account.
  3. Choose Two-step Verification and tap on Enabled.
  4. Type a 6-Digit PIN code. Then, tap Next.

You will be required to enter the 6-Digit PIN code each time you use WhatsApp after completing the Two-Factor Authentication setup. You will feel more secure and at peace knowing that only you can access your account.

Along with these, practice the following security measures:

  • Never install apps from unknown sources. Be extra careful if the apps are free.
  • Do not scan any QR code given to you unless it’s from a trusted source.
  • Do not give your phone to people if you can’t see what they are doing.

Frequently Asked Questions About WhatsApp Hacking

1. How to check if my WhatsApp is hacked?

There are several indicators on how to check if your WhatsApp has been hacked:

  • Unusual messages: You may receive spam or phishing messages from your account that you didn’t send.
  • Unknown contacts: Strangers may suddenly appear in your contact list.
  • Changes to your profile: Your profile information, such as your display picture or name, may be altered without your knowledge.

2. How can I know someone is reading my WhatsApp messages?

While WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption, it’s difficult to determine definitively if someone is reading your messages without your knowledge. However, if you notice unusual activity, such as messages being read or delivered at unusual times, it could be a sign of potential hacking.

3. Can WhatsApp be tracked or hacked?

WhatsApp is generally considered a secure messaging app due to its end-to-end encryption. However, it’s not entirely immune to hacking. If you have compromised your account security, such as by sharing your two-factor authentication code or downloading malicious apps, your account may be vulnerable to hacking.

4. What if I suspect my WhatsApp is hacked?

If you suspect your WhatsApp account has been hacked, take immediate action:

  • Change your password: Create a strong, unique password for your WhatsApp account.
  • Enable two-factor authentication: This adds an extra layer of security to your account.
  • Log out of all devices: Disconnect any active sessions on other devices linked to your account.
  • Report the incident to WhatsApp: Contact WhatsApp support for assistance.

5. Can someone read my WhatsApp chats from another phone?

If someone has physical access to your phone, they can read your WhatsApp chats. Additionally, if you have shared your two-factor authentication code with someone, they could potentially access your account from another device. It’s important to keep your phone secure and never share your two-factor authentication code with anyone.

Additional Tips:

  • Be cautious of suspicious links: Do not click on links from unknown sources, as they may lead to malicious websites.
  • Use strong passwords: Avoid using easily guessable passwords for your WhatsApp account.
  • Keep your WhatsApp app updated: Regularly update your WhatsApp app to ensure you have the latest security patches.
  • Be wary of public Wi-Fi networks: Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for sensitive activities like logging into your WhatsApp account, as these networks may be less secure.

6. How to check if my WhatsApp is hacked on iPhone

  • Review Recent Chats: Look for any unusual or suspicious messages, such as spam or messages from unknown contacts.
  • Check Contact List: Verify if any unfamiliar contacts have been added to your list.
  • Inspect Profile Settings: Ensure that your profile information is correct and hasn’t been changed without your knowledge.
  • Look for Unusual Activity: Check your WhatsApp settings for any signs of unusual activity, such as recent logins from unknown devices or changes to your account settings.
