The University of Winnipeg has confirmed the cyber intrusion from last month and warned that the “individuals who attacked us stole information.”
According to the university’s updates and support page, the cyberattack on the University of Winnipeg has resulted in the pilferation of personal information of current and former students and employees.
The cyberattack was discovered on March 24, 2024, and quickly unfolded into a full-blown data breach, shaking the university community to its core.
University of Winnipeg Data Breach Confirmed
The impacted individuals in this University of Winnipeg cyberattack include current and former employees dating back to 2003, as well as students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs since September 2018. However, certain student groups, such as those in Professional, Applied, and Continuing Education (PACE) programs, were spared from the breach.
The compromised data is a trove of personal information, ranging from names and social insurance numbers to bank account details. Additionally, students’ academic records, including program details and tuition amounts, were also exposed. This University of Winnipeg data breach has left countless individuals vulnerable to identity theft and financial fraud, exacerbating the distress caused by the cyberattack.
In response to this situation, the University of Winnipeg is taking proactive measures to mitigate the fallout. Mitigation Against the University of Winnipeg Data Breach

The University of Winnipeg acknowledges the profound disruption it has caused to the community. Despite the adversity, the university has asserted that the exam schedule for April 2024 was updated.
The April 18-24 schedule remained unchanged, while the April 11-17 exams were moved to April 25 to May 2, including common exams. Students unable to attend due to the change were advised to contact instructors or Academic Advising.
Additionally, all members of the University community were required to reset their UWinnipeg passwords by April 3 to restore online services. Instructions for password reset were provided based on user type. Failure to reset by the deadline resulted in a forced password change upon accessing the system.
