The Toronto Zoo finds itself struggling with a cyber incident. The zoo management recently discovered that some of its systems were accessed and locked by an unauthorized user last week. However, despite the intrusion, the officials have released an official notification claiming that no sensitive information has been exposed in the Toronto Zoo Cyberattack.

The notification has stated that a thorough investigation is underway to assess the extent of damage caused by the “Cyber incident. The Cyber Express has reached out to Toronto Zoo to verify the details of the cyberattack but an official response was not available at the time of writing this report.

Toronto Zoo Cyberattack: What Information was Accessed?

The Toronto Zoo ransomware attack was first detected in the early morning of Friday, January 5, 2024. Swift action was taken by Zoo staff to assess the extent of the situation and initiate investigations into the potential impact on guests, members, and donor records.

Despite the risk of information theft and data breach, no sensitive data was compromised. Moreover, the organization said that no credit card information was stored within the systems compromised in the Toronto Zoo cyber incident. The Zoo administration has set up a press page to keep the public informed as more details emerge from the incident.

Additionally, the welfare, care, and support systems for the animals remain unaffected by the Toronto Zoo cyberattack. The Toronto Zoo continues its operations without a hitch, welcoming guests on the premises. The website stands resilient, untouched by the Toronto Zoo cyberattack, and online ticket purchases can still be processed through the completely functional website.

The Toronto Zoo has enlisted the support of the City of Toronto’s Chief Information Security Office and third-party cybersecurity experts. The Toronto Zoo cyberattack has also been reported to the Toronto Police Services, as the Zoo endeavors to bring a swift resolution to the “Cyber incident“.

In the face of adversity, the Toronto Zoo has appealed for patience from its patrons over the next few days. While the staff is committed to responding promptly, the Toronto Zoo cyber incident may impact response times. The Zoo stated that no additional information was currently available, and updates will be provided as more insights are gained from the investigation.

As the Zoo struggles with this unforeseen challenge, it extends heartfelt thanks to its patrons for their patience and understanding. The Toronto Zoo also expressed gratitude for the measures taken in recent years to upgrade its technology, which has undoubtedly contributed to minimizing potential fallout.

Similar Cyber Incidents In the Past

Cyberattacks are becoming increasingly prevalent, highlighting the importance of cyber-safe technological infrastructure. Last year, the Toronto Public Library was also targeted in a cyberattack. The attack had led to serious operational disruptions for the library.

A ransomware gang had targeted the Toronto Public Library in late October 2023. This cyberattack caused a continuing disruption in the library’s services. The cyberattack had brought down the public computers and printers at the library’s branches as well as the website.

Authorities suspected that the hackers took copies of official identification documents and social insurance numbers belonging to both present and past workers.

Cyberattacks have grown common in Canada. In September 2023, the Indian Cyber Force hacking group claimed responsibility for taking down the Canadian military website. The group also claimed to have infiltrated a few websites owned by small businesses in Canada. In November 2023, the LockBit ransomware group claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on a Canadian government contractor. The attack exposed sensitive information about an undisclosed number of employees.

According to the Cyber Centre, ransomware is the most disruptive form of cybercrime facing Canada. It can have a serious impact on an organization’s functioning.
